OUR PHILOSOPHY OF MINISTRY

The church does not
belong to us.

Why Bonanza Community Church ministers the way it does.

WHERE WE BEGIN

Before we determine how ministry should be done, we must understand whose church it is.

Jesus said, “I will build My church” (Matthew 16:18). Paul tells us that Christ “is also head of the body, the church” (Colossians 1:18).

That changes the question.

We are not free to simply ask, What kind of church would we like to build? We must ask, What does Christ desire for His church, and what has He revealed in His Word?

Our philosophy of ministry at Bonanza Community Church begins there.

CHRIST'S CHURCH

We are stewards, not owners.

Christ purchased the church with His own blood. He is its Head, and He alone has the right to determine its purpose. That means ministry cannot ultimately be built around a pastor's personality, a congregation's preferences, or the latest model of church growth.

Those entrusted with leadership belong first to Jesus Christ. Paul repeatedly described himself with the Greek word doulos (δοῦλος)—literally, a slave. The word expresses more than simply performing acts of service; it speaks of belonging to a master and living under his authority. We belong to Christ because He has purchased us, and therefore we serve His people as those who answer ultimately to Him. Our responsibility is not to build something that belongs to us, but to faithfully care for what belongs to Him.

Matthew 16:18 · Acts 20:28 · Colossians 1:18

SCRIPTURE GOVERNS

God's Word determines both message and ministry.

If the church belongs to Christ, then Scripture must govern the church. We do not look first to tradition, culture, popularity, or what another church is doing. We begin with God's Word.

This affects more than what is preached on Sunday. Scripture should shape our worship, leadership, discipleship, fellowship, priorities, and the ministries we choose to undertake.

“Does it work?” can never replace the more important question: “Is it faithful?”

2 Timothy 3:16–17

“The goal is not to become another church. The goal is to be faithful as Bonanza Community Church in this community at this time.”

WHY WE EXIST

Ministry begins and ends with the glory of God.

The church does not exist primarily for itself. We gather to worship and glorify God, to be instructed by His Word, to encourage one another, and to be equipped to live faithfully for Christ.

Serving people matters deeply, but people are not consumers and ministry is not a product. We seek to love people as those Christ values while keeping His glory and His purposes at the center of church life.

1 Corinthians 10:31 · Ephesians 3:20–21

DISCIPLE-MAKING

We are not merely seeking decisions or attendance.

The Great Commission calls the church to make disciples. Evangelism matters because people need to hear the gospel and come to faith in Jesus Christ. But the work does not end at conversion.

Believers need to be taught, equipped, and encouraged toward maturity so that they increasingly become people who can minister to others. A healthy biblical ministry should gradually produce people who themselves become ministers.

Matthew 28:19–20 · Ephesians 4:11–16

BIBLICAL LEADERSHIP

Leadership in Christ's church is service.

Church leadership is not about position, status, or being above others. Jesus overturned the world's understanding of greatness when He taught that the one who would be great must become a servant.

Pastors and other leaders are entrusted with responsibility before Christ. They are to shepherd, teach, equip, and model faithfulness rather than lord authority over God's people. Leadership should increasingly equip others to do the work of ministry rather than making ministry dependent upon a few people.

Mark 10:42–45 · 1 Peter 5:1–4 · Ephesians 4:11–12

FAITHFULNESS

We do not measure success the way the world does.

The world naturally asks how big, how many, and how fast. Those numbers may tell us something, but they cannot tell us whether a church is faithful.

Scripture says, “it is required of stewards that one be found trustworthy.” Our responsibility is faithfulness to Christ. Growth is ultimately His work. We want to labor diligently while refusing to compromise truth simply to produce a result that looks successful.

1 Corinthians 4:2

METHODS MATTER

The means should agree with the message.

A biblical message does not justify every possible method. We do not want manipulation, entertainment, pressure, or pragmatism to accomplish what we say is spiritual work.

Our methods should reflect the truth we proclaim. People are not numbers to be accumulated or consumers to be attracted. They are people to be loved, taught, discipled, and pointed toward Christ.

LIFE TOGETHER

Fellowship requires intentionality.

Being in the same building does not automatically produce biblical fellowship. The New Testament pictures believers sharing life, encouraging one another, bearing burdens, praying together, and helping one another follow Christ.

We therefore want church life to create genuine opportunities for relationships to grow. Fellowship is not an optional extra added to teaching; it is part of life together as the Body of Christ.

Acts 2:42 · Hebrews 10:24–25

MAKING MINISTRY DECISIONS

Not every good idea is necessarily ours to do.

When considering a ministry, program, or opportunity, we want our decisions to flow from biblical conviction rather than pressure to stay busy or imitate someone else.

01

Is it biblical?

Does Scripture permit it, support it, and allow us to pursue it faithfully?

02

Does it glorify Christ?

Will it keep attention where it belongs rather than making ministry about us?

03

Does it make disciples?

Will it genuinely help people know, follow, and mature in Christ?

04

Does it strengthen the Body?

Will it contribute to the spiritual health and ministry of the church?

05

Can we do it faithfully?

Do we have the people, resources, and ability to do it well without neglecting what God has already entrusted to us?

THE MEASURE

Faithful to Christ.

We do not expect to do everything, nor are we trying to become another church. Our desire is simpler and more demanding: to be faithful to Jesus Christ, to His Word, and to the ministry He has entrusted to Bonanza Community Church.
